CASE STUDY:
Innovative Technology & Style Keep Chicago’s 500 N. Michigan Relevant for a New Generation
A Modern Refresh for a Magnificent Mile Icon
Prominently located on the Magnificent Mile, 500 North Michigan has been a familiar destination for Chicagoans since 1968. Designed by the renowned architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the tower still reflects its timeless modern aesthetic with tinted glass and travertine stone.
A Redevelopment Designed for a Connected Experience
When Macerich acquired the property in 2012, they envisioned a redevelopment that would better integrate 500 North Michigan with the neighboring Shops at North Bridge. While the buildings were never physically joined, the renovation modernized the tower—and Captivate was part of that vision from the start. Three Wall Street Journal Office Media Network screens (later acquired and upgraded by Captivate in 2014) were temporarily removed during construction and reinstalled immediately after, ensuring tenants continued to enjoy the media experience they valued. Today, the screens sit in two of the building’s busiest elevator banks, giving tenants engaging content during their daily wait times.
Modern Hardware, Same Trusted Captivate Experience
Since the renovation, 500 North Michigan has expanded its Captivate footprint by adopting ScreenCenter™, Captivate’s tenant communication platform. The property also upgraded to sleek Large Format Displays that blend seamlessly into the building’s refreshed interior. These new screens provide access to tenant directories, real‑time alerts, and custom messaging from property management—delivering a polished, modern communication experience that keeps the building relevant and connected.
Together We’ll Captivate Your Tenants
Captivate gives your building more than a screen. It delivers a smarter way to connect with the people who matter most through curated content & custom building messaging that improves tenant experiences & fosters community.
